BHP Billiton Tertiary Scholarship

What are the scholarships?
The scholarships are offered to selected tertiary students, and to selected students who are completing year 12, who gain entry into one of the following undergraduate degree courses at the University of Wollongong, the University of NSW, or at any Queensland University:

Engineering (Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, Mineral Processing and Mining)
Environmental Science (or equivalent), Geology, Occupational Health & Safety
Spatial Science/Surveying

Who Can Apply?
Students who are currently tertiary students and students who are studying year 12 in 2008, or who were in year 12 in 2007 and have deferred entry to tertiary study for 12 months, may apply for the scholarships. Applicants must apply for entry to study full time in 2009 in one of the nine categories of degree courses, related to mining, at one of the Universities, described in the section above.

Information about applying.

What do the scholarships offer?
BMA scholarship students receive a total of A$8,500/year for a three or four year full-time degree if they progress successfully in their course of study. A$4,250 is paid at the beginning of each of the first and second full-time semesters of each year. Payment for each semester of the three or four years of the course, (depending on its length), is conditional on the successful completion of the previous semester.

Paid Vacation Employment
If you successfully complete the subjects for each stage of your course, you will be considered for paid vacation employment at one of BMA’s mining operations or our coal-loading port at the end of the second and third year of your course. Industry experience is so important in today’s mining industry and the chance to be mentored and supported throughout your University career (and beyond) is a great opportunity.

Eligibility
All applicants must be Australian citizens; have completed, or be completing, year 12 by the end of 2008; be accepted into one of our preferred undergraduate degree programs of study; and fit the selection criteria.
